For our first night in LA we went to dinner with Amie and David (sister in law and husband) at Katsu-ya in Studio City.  (Dont confuse it with the new place in Hollywood, the quality of the sushi is better at the Studio City location) This is one of the best sushi places I’ve ever been to and probably one of the best in the country.  You wouldn’t know this from looking at the exterior, it’s a little hole-in-the-wall place in a strip mall and looks completely nondescript, except for the line of people outside waiting to get in. You know its a good place once you sit down at your table and they bring in a white board with today’s specials (piece of advice: order off the white board, asking for a menu will instantly identify you as a newbie to Katsu-ya or sushi itself).  Pictures and details after the break.

Kristen had her favorite sushi, the Spicy Tuna with Crispy Rice. It’s a spicy tuna mixture that is placed on top of warm deep fried rice, which does a great job of giving you a cold (tuna) and hot (rice) treat. Here is a picture of the sushi before we devoured them…

My favorite sushi at Katsu-ya is the Super Toro. Toro is is a fatty cut of tuna, it looks pinker than the regular tuna (lower fat content) and tastes richer than regular tuna. Super Toro takes this to another level. At Katsu-ya they serve each piece of Super Toro on a small piece of warm white rice. This has the effect of beginning to melt the fat in the tuna, so that when you place it in your mouth there is no need to chew, the tuna blends with the rice providing an ultra rich flavor. Below is a picture of the sushi pieces before I made them disappear 🙂

We also got to see a couple of celbrities while eating last night, Jamie Presley and Jenna Elfman sat a couple of tables behind us. Okay this is stretching the use of the word celebrity, but still better than nothing. Tomorrow we are going to David and Amie’s for a New Years Eve bash.

After reading that I want to go back to Katsu-Ya right now! Next time I will have to order the ‘Super’ Toro.
