Philly Day 3 – Cars, Halo and Cheesesteaks

So Day 3 started off in a European manner, with a classic Irish breakfast of Soda Farl at Ida Mae’s Bruncherie. For those who haven’t had this before, it is a breakfast sandwich of eggs, suasages and ham on soda bread slices. Very tasty and also very hearty, actually didn’t need to have lunch.

After breakfast Jaime and I took his car in to get the brakes looked at (the car was making a weird rocking motion when braking). We killed time by stopping at Game Stop and picked up Halo 3 for his XBOX. Took some time to go visit cousins in New Jersey and picked up the car afterwards.

Finally, came time to make the brave the streets and get my cheesesteak. We decided to go to Pat’s King of Steaks, one of the two main places people go for cheesesteak. (Gino’s, the other option, was nice but the neon was a little too Vegas) We got to Pat’s at the same time as the crowds from the Phillies game were arriving so we had a little wait (line wrapped around the building), but in the end it was worth it! Sandwich was great and the accompanying fries were also great.

Finally we headed back to Jaime’s and chilled out in the evening with Halo and Jaime’s kegerator (serving Walt’s Wit from Philadelphia Brewing Company). The pictures below are in a nice slideshow created at Rockyou.com.

Returning from Philadelphia this afternoon. Had a great time visiting my brother and I’m now ready to tackle a new work week. Our flight currently parked on the tarmac while some weather clears over western New York. Thank goodness I brought my Kindle!

Update: Still waiting. Added a picture of my thrilled expression below. Might take off in the next 30 minutes but the pilot just made dinner reservations here in Philly so who knows : )

Philly Day 2 – Wrapping up some business

Spent the second half of day 2 in Philadelphia helping my brother out with some chores around the city. We broke down his photography exhibit at the Art Institute of Philadelphia. Then we ran over to the hardware store and grocery store to get some supplies for the weekend.  For dinner, my brother cooked up a combo of Salmon and rice with peas. We originally had plans to go visit some family in New Jersey, but plans changed so we decided to go to a late showing of the Dark Knight.

The movie was great as advertised. Ledger really does bring that psychotic madman persona to the Joker without taking it over the top or being too cartoonish. Christian Bale got better as the movie wore on, but the “husky” voice he uses when he is Batman starts to annoy you about halfway  through the movie.  Aaron Eckhart was also great as Harvey Dent, played him the same as I imagined him in the comic books. The movie itself is about the battle between good and evil and how evil does a good person have to be in order to combat evil.  There was also a taste of the whole “If super heroes are keeping an eye on us, who is monitoring them?” This has been addressed a few times in the X-Men movies and is a part of the concept of the new Watchmen movie, whose trailer was attached to the beginning of the Dark Knight. On a side note, I bought the graphic novel and am about halfway through, it is a great read and has incredible writing to drive along a story, something not usually seen in comic books.  The comics themselves have covered the topic multiple times like the Marvel’s Civil War series and DC Comics modern version of the Omac story or Identity Crisis story line.

Day 3 in Philly promises to be fun, planning on finally getting that cheesesteak!

Starting off Day 2 of my Philly visit with breakfast at Honey’s Sit and Eat. The place is very relaxed and serves great food (I recommend the Huevos Rancheros or anything off the Special’s board). The picture below is of the restaurant in the Northern Liberty area of Philadelphia.

Well I’m at the airport waiting for the flight to the City of Brotherly Love to see my brother. He bought a house recently and this weekend was a good opportunity to go visit and get a tour of the city. Tomorrow we are planning on catching Dark Knight on a local IMAX screen. Plan for Saturday is to find a cheesesteak sandwich the size of a bulldog. See you on the other side!
